Our friend, John Lee

This past weekend, the BEST club was taking their yearly trip to Oshima Island. We were all enjoying our time at Oshima Camp when John Lee suddenly died the last night, July 31st, 2006.
Nav Staff Mark Rood, Project Team Leader John Lee, Summer Worker Cole Robinson, and 2 Japanese BEST students went swimming at a nearby beach. All the circumstances that lead to John's death were extremely strange, and we can only explain that God had arranged for this to be John's time to die. The Bible says in Psalm 139:16 that before we lived one day, God had written down each day and knew what we would experience in our lives. God is not surprised by John's death. This was exactly as God had planned for John.

John was an excellent swimmer and had much experience swimming in the ocean. The events that lead up to John's drowning are a bit difficult, but Mark and Cole think that perhaps he had a heart attack or was pushed into a rock by the waves. John was struggling to swim back into shore for a while and Cole swam out to pull him in. John was floating on his back and was already unconscious when Cole reached him. After Cole pulled him in, he and Mark performed CPR on John for at least 15 minutes before the ambulance came. Later that evening John was pronounced dead.

It may be hard to understand why God would take him away from his friends and family here on earth but Jesus taught us in the Bible to believe that this is not the end of our friendship with John.

We all feel like God was preparing us to have John taken away. This summer our team (Cole, John, Jerry, Ryan, Mike, Christy, Jane, Joni, Priscilla, Ojen, Mary, Mark and Joanna) were studying 1 Thessalonians which is a book in the Bible.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, the author, Paul comforts the people who have lost their friends to death. Paul says this,

"Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage each other with these words."

Last week at our 1 Thessalonian Bible study, John was sharing how he was excited about when Jesus Christ will return for all who believe. I remember him saying few Christians talk about it or encourage one another at this idea that Jesus is going to return. It's going to be exciting for all the Christians. 1 Thessalonians encourages us to not grieve as those with no hope because we have the hope that Jesus Christ has conquered death and for those who believe in Jesus, we will be together with Him and God one day. We know John waits for us in Heaven and Jesus taught us that Heaven is our Home. The Bible tells us, that we should have good courage during hard times and that while we are on earth we are away from the Lord. To die is to be together with Jesus or to be home.

John lived a good life by faith and John died remaining faithful. John believed that Jesus was the only way to have True Life.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)

And the truth is that death is a reality for each of us, and John had a good death. Jerry said, "I only hope I can live and die as well as John did. Even in death John continues to teach me."

We know in life, John encouraged a lot of you to think deeply about what happens after you die and we hope that in his own death, he can teach you about Truth and life.

We have a choice now to either come together as friends or be scattered and try to forget. This happened in Jesus' life as well and he asked his friends,

"You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve.
Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God." (John 6:67-69)

I know a lot of you are concerned about us and so I would like to thank you for your concerns and sorrow. We feel very loved by our friends here in Japan.

先週末からＢＥＳＴクラブは毎年恒例の大島キャンプに行きました。２００６年７月３１日（月）にジョン・リーさんが
突然亡くなったとき、大部分のメンバーは、そのことを知らずに、とても楽しい時を過ごしていました。

ナビゲータースタッフのマークさん、サマーチームのリーダーのジョンさん、サマーチームの一員のコール君と２人の
ＢＥＳＴの学生は近くの浜に泳ぎに行きました。ジョンさんを死に追いやったすべての状況はとても不思議で、
神様がジョンさんのためにあらかじめ備えていた彼の死のタイミングに合わせて、この状況を準備したとしか説明
できないように思います。聖書の詩篇１３９章１６節は、私たちが生まれる前に、神様はすでに私たちが人生の中で
経験することを知っていて、そのことを書き記していると言っています。神様はジョンさんの死に驚いてはいません。
この死は、ジョンさんのために神様が計画していてくれたことなのです。

ジョンさんは海で泳ぐことにも慣れているグットスイマーでした。ですから、ジョンさんの溺れる原因を考える時、なぜこんな
ことが起こったんだろうと首をかしげざるをえません。でもマークさんとコール君は、ジョンさんが波で岩の方まで押されてしまったのだろうと考えています。ジョンさんはしばらくの間、岸に戻ろうと四苦八苦していました。そしてコール君はジョンさんを引っ張りあげるため、彼のもとへと泳ぎました。ジョンさんは、コール君の背中に乗せてもらい、その上でその体を力なく漂わせていました。コール君がジョンさんのもとに泳ぎ着いた時、ジョンさんの意識はもうありませんでした。コール君がジョンさんを陸に引き上げたあと、マークさんとコール君は、救急車が来るまで、約１５分間、ジョンさんに人工呼吸をほどこしました。しかし、その夜ジョンさんは亡くなりました。

一体どうして神様は家族や私たちのような友人からジョンさんをとりあげてしまうのかと理解に苦しむかもしれませんが、聖書の中では、イエスが、この死をもってジョンさんとの友情が終わってしまうのではないということを信じるように教えています。

私たちは神様が私たちのために、ジョンさんの死に対する備えを与えてくれていたように感じています。この夏私たちチーム（コール、ジョン、ジェリー、ライアン、マイク、クリスティ、ジェーン、ジョニー、プリセラ、オージェン、メア
リー、マーク、ジョアナ）は聖書の中にある「テサロニケ人への手紙第一」という箇所を一緒に学んでいました。

この手紙の４章１３－１８節に、著者パウロが友人を失ってしまった人たちを慰める様子が書かれています。そこにはこう書いてあります。「愛する皆さん。イエス・キリストを信じる人が死んだらどうなるか、よく知っておいてほしいのです。それは、悲しみのあまり取り乱して、何の希望もない人たちと同じようにならないためです。私たちはイエスの死後の復活を確かなことと信じています。ですから、イエスが帰ってこられる時、すでに死んで世を去ったすべての信仰者を、神様がともに連れ戻してくださると信じてよいのです。私は、主から直接聞いたとおりに伝えるのですが、主が再び来られる時に、私たちが生きていたとしても、すでに墓の中にいる人たちをさしおいて主にお会いすることは断じてありません。主は、大号令と、天使長の声と、神の召集ラッパの響きとともに、天から下ってこられます。その時、まず最初に復活して、主にお会いできるのは、すでにこの世を去っている信仰者です。それから、なお生きて地上に残っている私たちが、一緒に雲に包まれて、空中で主とお会いするのです。そして、いつまでも主とともに過ごすことになります。ですから、このことをわきまえて、互いに慰め合い、励まし合いなさい。」

先週この手紙について学んでいた時に、ジョンさんは、信じる人たちのために、イエス・キリストが戻ってくる時がいかに待ち遠しいか、わくわくしているかを話してくれました。私は、ジョンさんがこう言ったのを覚えています。「イエスを信じている人の中で、イエスが戻ってくる時について話し、そのことをもって励ましあう人たちはほとんどいません。そのことはすべての信じる人にとってわくわくすることです。テサロニケ人への手紙第一は、私たちが希望のない人たちのように悲しまないようにと励ましています。なぜなら、私たちは、イエス・キリストが死を征服し、イエスを信じる人たちのために、私たちがいつの日か、イエスと神様とともにいれるようにしてくれるという希望を持っています。」私たちは、ジョンさんが私たちの本当の家である天国で私たちを待っていることを知っています。聖書は、次のように言っています。私たちが地上で、神様と離れている間や苦しい時でも私たちは勇気を持つべきです。死ぬということは、イエスとずっと一緒にいることであり、私たちの本当の家にいることを意味するからです。
ジョンさんは信仰をもってよい人生を生き抜きました。そしてジョンさんは信仰深く亡くなりました。ジョンさんは、イエスが本当の人生をを得るための唯一の道であると信じていました。聖書のヨハネの福音書３章１６節にこう書いてあります。「実に神は、ひとり子をさえ惜しまず与えるほどに、世を愛してくださいました。それは、神の御子を信じる者が、だれ一人滅びず、永遠のいのちを得るためです。」

死ぬということが、だれにでも起こりうるというのは、現実であり、真実ですが、ジョンさんはよい死を与えられたと思います。ジェリー君は「僕はただジョンさんと同じように生き、死にたい。死を通してさえ、彼は私に教え続けてくれた。」と話していました。

私たちは、生活の中で、ジョンさんが多くのみんなに自分が死んだらどうなるのかよく考えてみるように励ましていたことを知っています。そして、彼の死を通して、ジョンさんがみんなに人生と真理をもっと話すことができるようにと望むのです。

私たちには一つの選択があります。友人として、一緒に来るか、そこから逃げ、そのことを忘れようとするか。
このことはイエス自身も体験しました。ヨハネの福音書６章６７－６９節「そこで、イエスは十二人の弟子たちにも、「あなたがたは、まさか行ってしまわないでしょうね。」とお尋ねになりました。シモン・ペテロが、即座に答えました。「何をおっしゃっているんです、先生。あなた様をさしおいて、他の人のところへ行くわけがないじゃありませんか！永遠のいのちを与えることばを握っているのは、あなた様だけなんですから。私たちは、そのことばを信じておりますし、あなた様が神のきよい御子だということも、存じ上げております。」」

多くの人が私たちのことを心配してくれていると知っていますから、この場を借りて、お礼を言わせてください。
ここ日本でみんなのような友達にとても大切にされ、愛されていると感じています。
